An official publication of Global Gaming Expo SEPTEMBER 2002 EditorialNews of our own Welcome to Casino Journal’s eighth annual “World of Slots,” where we profile the gaming industry’s slot-machine makers and reveal their latest games. It has always been one of our most sought-after special sections. (To be honest, we’re probably just as grateful as you are that it is finally in your hands. Over the years, as the number of industry vendors has grown, World of Slots has become a more extensive undertaking for our editorial, art and production staff, as well as for the vendors we depend on to provide us with the information and graphics we need to produce a quality product. We would like to thank them here for their continued cooperation and support, which is particularly appreciated considering that our requests always coincide with their pre-show crunch time.) You’ll find this year’s World of Slots a little different than previous issues. It’s written by a new contributor (veteran Las Vegas newsman Bob Shemeligian, formerly with the Las Vegas Sun newspaper) and presented in a new, easier-to-read format. Don’t worry—all your favorite slot manufacturers are still there—but they’re accompanied this time by the latest available financial data and analyst recommendations on each company in addition to the standard new game descriptions and eye-catching graphics. We think it’ll be a keeper—a handbook, per se, to refer to while you are visiting the real thing during this year’s Global Gaming Expo (G2E) sponsored by the American Gaming Association and Reed Exhibitions. For more information or to register for or exhibit at the show, which is being held Sept. 17-19 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, visit the G2E website, www.globalgamingexpo.com. Just as many manufacturers keep their latest products under wraps until September in order to display them for the first time at the show, you’ll find much of the information in World of Slots is also brand new. It just so happens that we have news of our own to announce in this issue and at the show. In July, Casino Journal became the official publication of the American Gaming Equipment Manufacturers Association and welcomed a bimonthly AGEM column to the magazine’s departments. This month we announce another alliance, this time with the highly respected investment-banking firm Deutsche Bank Securities. Deutsche Bank has agreed to be the exclusive investment-banking sponsor of the ninth annual American Gaming Summit, and Managing Director Marc Falcone has agreed to serve as Casino Journal’s stock-review columnist. You’ll find his latest up-to-the-minute analysis of the industry’s stocks in this issue. Deutsche Bank will have a large role in shaping the content of the financial portion of the American Gaming Summit 2003, an annual event produced by Casino Journal’s parent company, GEM Communications, and Lionel, Sawyer & Collins, Nevada’s largest law firm. The investment-banking firm is expected to bring more than 100 institutional investors to the summit, set for Jan. 9-10 at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The AGS will honor Phil Satre, chairman of Harrah’s Entertainment, with the Lifetime Achievement Award, and his illustrious gaming career will be the subject of Casino Journal’s January cover story. (For more information on the summit, visit www.americangamingsummit.com.) GEM Communications is also announcing a new trade-show partnership with the University of Arizona’s Race Track Industry Program. The partners are producing a one-day conference—the Racing and Gaming Summit—Dec. 10 in Tucson as part of RTIP’s Symposium on Racing, which runs Dec. 10-13. The Racing and Gaming Summit, to be held at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, will examine the combination of casinos and racing into “racinos” as the new growth sector of the industry it is becoming. More information on both conferences is available online at www.rgsummit.com or www.ag.arizona.edu/rtip/. Casino Journal is proud to be one of the official publications of G2E. Whether you’re a longtime subscriber or perusing the magazine for the first time, we think you’ll find a great deal of value in this special World of Slots issue. We hope you’ll use it as your personal show preview and continue to refer to it long after this year’s trade show is just a fond memory. Look for other GEM publications and trade show information at our booth (#3011) during the show. See you there! |
