NEW YORK (August 8, 2000) – Officials with the World Gaming Congress and Expo (WGCE) today responded to the announcement of plans for a competing startup gaming trade show in 2001.

“A second show will not affect WGCE’s long-range plan of providing the industry’s premier international conference and trade show,” said GEM Communications CEO Bill Newman.

“Through IGWB magazine, we have been the independent source of gaming industry news for 21 years,” Newman said. “And for 14 years, World Gaming Congress and Expo has been the singular annual event that has brought together manufacturers and gaming property owners from around the world.”

Newman pointed out that IGWB’s trade show has enjoyed tremendous annual growth throughout its history – during the 10 years it operated independently, and during the four years it had an affiliation with the industry’s lobbying organization. Building on that history of success, the show will continue to grow by serving all segments of the international gaming industry, regardless of a company’s size or rank within the industry.

“More than 25,000 gaming executives, buyers and sellers are expected at World Gaming Congress and Expo 2000,” said WGCE Senior Vice President Brian Vargas. “It will feature more than 70 educational seminars on 13 diverse topics, including a popular track devoted to Indian Gaming, which is one of the fastest-growing segments of the industry.

“Once again, we will present an international collection of well-respected speakers who are experts in their diverse fields,” Vargas continued. “And a record-breaking 700-plus exhibitors from around the globe – representing every segment of the gaming and hospitality industries – will fill the Las Vegas Convention Center.”

World Gaming Congress and Expo 2000 will be held October 18-20, 2000, at the Las Vegas Convention Center. It is preceded by the one-day Slot Manager Institute on October 17.
