GEM COMMUNICATIONS PUBLISHING GROUP ANNOUNCES NEW SENIOR WRITER, TWO PROMOTIONS

James Rutherford Brings Years of Industry Experience to GEM Publications

LAS VEGAS (October 22, 2002) -- GEM Communications, producer of the world's leading gaming industry publications, announces the addition of James Rutherford to its editorial staff. As senior writer, Rutherford will contribute feature articles and regular columns to both International Gaming and Wagering Business (IGWB) and Casino Journal. Rutherford replaces Dave Palermo, who accepted a position with the California Nations Indian Gaming Association. 

Rutherford brings to GEM Communications 18 years of experience as a writer and editor, most recently as the manager editor of Global Gaming Business. He is a former staff writer, regional news editor and assistant news editor for The Press of Atlantic City, and a former editor for Business News New Jersey

He began covering the gaming industry in 1995 as a features writer and editor for Casino Journal Publishing Group in Las Vegas. He has contributed news and feature stories to The New York Times, the Philadelphia Inquirer, New Jersey Monthly, Atlantic City Magazine, Rutgers Magazine, the Las Vegas Mercury and the Las Vegas Jazz Society's Jazz Notes. He is a winner of the Evening News Association's James E. Scripps Award for Investigative Reporting and a New Jersey Press Association Award for Business Writing. He is co-author of "Trumped! The Inside Story of the Real Donald Trump" (Simon & Schuster, 1991). 

Rutherford's addition to the GEM staff is part of an ongoing effort to enhance the editorial quality of the industry's leading business-to-business magazines, said Ashley Smith, president GEM US.

Smith also announced the promotion of longtime Slot Manager and IGWB editor Marian Green. As GEM's new editorial director, Green will oversee all of GEM's US publications, helping to ensure each magazine's unique editorial voice. She will report to Charles Anderer, vice president group publisher, GEM US.

"Marian is someone whose knowledge of the industry and our magazines commands respect. GEM also announces the promotion of Andy Holtmann to managing editor of Casino Journal. "Andy and Dave Ellingson, under the leadership of Jamie McKee, have done an excellent job of maintaining the quality of Casino Journal and of producing a first-rate National Gaming Summary every week," Anderer said. "Andy's assumption of additional editorial duties as managing editor of Casino Journal is a recognition of his many talents, his dedication to the Journal and of his deep knowledge of the North American casino industry."
